Since I've become a serious student of Christian Science, I've experienced many physical healings, but my gratitude is greatest for the sense of satisfaction and usefulness it has brought into my life.

After graduation from West Point and four years in the military I was a successful young captain, but completely dissatisfied with my lot. Thinking my problem was the Establishment, I left the service and entered graduate school. Although I participated earnestly in anti-Establishment activities, began the use of drugs, and actively rejected any vestige of "straight" society, I still felt no sense of satisfaction or of useful endeavor.

After finishing the graduate work I went west and tried various jobs, but found nothing in which I could feel truly useful. At that point I completely "dropped out," began frequent use of LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) and mescaline, and began almost daily smoking of cannabis derivatives. I quickly became a strict "acid-head," hoping thereby to achieve a sense of peace.
