Identity: The Kingdom Within

People all over the world today want clearer recognition and appreciation of their individual worth. Groups as well as individuals feel aware of inner stature that must be recognized if they are to live effectively and with satisfaction. The desirability of developing positive identity comes up in every professional discussion concerning what individuals need most. It was stressed in the recent White House Conference on Children and Youth, aimed to help equip children to cope adequately with the problems of life.

That childhood experiences to a large extent determine the quality and scope of adult life finds general agreement in psychiatric and sociological circles. Nevertheless, it is agreed that despite the experiences one has or has not had it is the individual's feelings about them that determine their effect. It is said there is an unknown factor, called an "x factor," influencing one in ways that cannot be predicted.

Human beings obviously need something they can depend on to give them self–assurance. Christ Jesus' teachings can give mankind confidence today. As a boy, he had said he must be about his Father's business. As an adult, he must have been in constant communion with God. He was sure of the ever–presence of good, declaring his unity with his Father, Spirit. He said, "Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."Luke 17:21;
