Forty–five years ago, when I was a very young student of Christian Science, with two young children of my own, a friend passed on with scarlet fever, leaving a premature baby of whom the doctor said it would be better if he had died, as he was deformed and would always be a cripple. Not one of the relatives would have the baby.

I was full of the joy of being able to demonstrate God's healing power in Christian Science and was sure that the baby could be healed, so I offered to have him on the condition that he have Christian Science treatment. The doctor would not let him be moved for a month, thinking he might be a carrier of the scarlet fever.

When the baby was born, he weighed just over five pounds; when I had him weighed, he was only three pounds and three ouncess. The nurse had been afraid to give him much food, since he did not act naturally. As soon as I had him, I gave him his normal food, and almost at once he had a natural movement. I had no more trouble from that cause.

The baby was having seizures of some sort, and at times I was a little afraid, but love for the little one overcame the fear.

One night when he kept screaming, I looked to see what was wrong and found a lump in the groin. A nurse lived next door, so I asked her to see what it was. She said it was a very severe hernia, so I called the doctor. He said the condition could not be healed, but could be mended when the baby was five years old, if he lived that long. It became more and more serious, and when the child was six months old, one Sunday evening it seemed worse than ever.

I put the baby down and read the Lesson–Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly for the week. I came on these words from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 567): "The Gabriel of His presence has no contests. To infinite, ever–present Love, all is Love, and there is no error, no sin, sickness, nor death. Against Love, the dragon warreth not long, for he is killed by the divine Principle." The baby stopped crying. In the morning the hernia was gone.

The child did not have a doctor again until World War II when he underwent physical examinations and passed for the Grenadier Guards.

I am truly grateful for Christian Science, and I send this testimony hoping that it may help someone as this child's healing has helped me.
