Proving Evil's Unreality
What is the origin of evil? Did God make evil as well as good? How is evil overcome? Many are asking these questions. Evil would often appear to be more powerful than good.
Christian Science defines evil as error. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "Error is the contradiction of Truth" and "Error is a belief without understanding." Science and Health, p. 472; Evil has no reality, is not created by God, who is Truth, and is neither person, place, nor thing. It is simply a false belief, an illusion of material sense. All evil, or materiality, is the erroneous concept of mortal mind, divine Mind's opposite, which claims to be something.
In the Bible we read, "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made" John 1:3; and "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Gen. 1:31; We can see that if God, Spirit, made all things and they were good, then evil must be only a false, material belief without foundation. Evil, materiality, has no origin. It is not created by God, but is an illusion of mortal mind.
