While suffering from a mild case of the flu, I was given antibiotics...

While suffering from a mild case of the flu, I was given antibiotics, which made me extremely ill. I appealed to a friend for help, having just learned that she was a Christian Scientist. She loaned me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I read it continually. After a few days, while reading in bed, I fell asleep. When I awoke, I was completely healed. As I stepped away from the bed, I felt as though I had just stepped out from under a dark cloud and that I had always been happy and healthy. This was my first experience of spiritual healing. Later I reached for a bottle of medicine that I had taken for a chronic ailment for years. As I did so, I remembered that God had not made the other illness, and so He certainly had not made this one. I threw the medicine away and never again suffered from the ailment.

One morning upon awakening I heard noises in my head resembling the sound of broken china. This was a healing of migraine. In trying to explain these healings to my family I encountered much disbelief. Shortly afterward a hard lump appeared in my breast. My husband insisted that I have a diagnosis. The result was that I was told I had a tumor. I was to return in two weeks for surgery, and was given a supply of sedatives. I put the medicine down the drain and said that I wished to handle this in Christian Science. My husband agreed to thirty days, after which time I was to return for the surgery.

I accepted this gratefully and went about doing my prayerful metaphysical work, or so I thought; but I was doing nothing but thinking of the passage of time. While taking clothes out of the dryer and piling them on top, I reached the depths of despair. I cried out "Oh, how do you tell God there is a time limit? What do you do?" Then I put my head down in the clothes and wept. As I did so, I felt a feeling of perfect peace, and then I knew that I must hold fast to the truth. I raised up my head and said, "I will."
