The Chemistry of the Body

From the standpoint of Christian Science one's human body is a presentation of his concept of himself.

To the physical senses the body may seem to be entirely material, composed of chemicals and formed by chemical or biochemical action. But God, Spirit, forms man spiritually in His own image. The individual man, therefore, is entirely spiritual. The only body he has is the embodiment of the qualities of God. There is no matter involved.

But from where we stand, each of us humanly embodies what he actually believes. The chemistry of the human body, then, depends upon how much of one's thought of himself accepts God, Spirit, as the only Life or Love, intelligence or substance, and how much of one's thought of oneself accepts matter as the source and substance of his being. Obedience to the commandment "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" Ex. 20:3 is a moral matter. The degree to which one obeys this commandment is the degree to which the spiritual elements hold the balance of power in one's thought of himself—his body.
