For all the blessings that have come into my life through Christian Science...
For all the blessings that have come into my life through Christian Science, I shall be ceaselessly grateful.
During several years of an illness three physicians tried to help me, but without success. An abdominal and a breast operation were to be undertaken. But as inflammation of the lungs and cardiac weakness intervened, my condition was declared hopeless. During this time I prayed earnestly, "Lord, lead me closer to Thee."
After I had been in bed four and a half months, I made the first attempt to walk. An acquaintance in the house saw me and lovingly inquired how I felt. She advised me to seek help in Christian Science, which I had never heard of. I gratefully accepted her invitation to attend the church services and obeyed this call as the voice of God. The readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy made a deep impression on me—above all, the words that God is Love, that He is good. This awakened my trust in a loving Father; it dispelled my fear of a stern God who punishes and censures, as I had been taught previously. I often looked up at the starry sky in the evening and said aloud in gratitude: "Lord, I did not know that You are so good!" Mrs. Eddy's answer to the question "What is God?" brought me a completely new view of God (Science and Health, p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love."
