As a child I prayed to God every night, asking that I might believe in Him. I considered myself an atheist and felt that this was very wrong. Actually, I was not an atheist, for an atheist does not pray to God as I did; however, I did not realize this.

While in my late teens, I became quite ill. After meals my stomach would be very painful. Sometimes I only drank fruit juice for my meals. I often felt very weak from lack of food. During this experience I was riding a horse six miles each day in order to attend high school. I rode in zero and even subzero weather and on very bad roads. Sometimes I felt almost too weak to climb the stairs at school to attend my classes. My grades during the first two years of this time were good enough for my name to appear on the school's honor roll. Then they became lower.

After I graduated, it was decided by the family physician that my appendix should be removed. This was done, but instead of being better, I suffered more. The physician said I had incipient stomach ulcers. I was in despair. One day my mother suggested that I try Christian Science, saying it could heal me. We lived in an area where there were no Churches of Christ, Scientist, or Christian Scientists.
