I hope that this testimony will comfort anyone who is yearning over a loved one who has left the teachings of Christian Science. I was one of those lost sheep Christ Jesus speaks of in Matthew 18. I had the privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School through high school days, but then began a life of what I was fooled into believing was "real living." I stopped going to Sunday School and did not attend church for a number of years. All my life I had been a very happy person, called "the life of the party" and usually the center of attention. Without Christian Science this proved to be my downfall.
As the wife of a Naval officer during World War II, I succumbed to the social life this entails and began to smoke and drink. The drinking gradually became heavier and heavier until I had no control over it. During these years I would remember Christian Science and at times reach out for it. My husband, a member of a Protestant church, was almost violently opposed to Christian Science.
Upon our return to civilian life after the war, our lives were topsy-turvy. Our baby son was very ill, my husband was having a difficult time adjusting to a civilian occupation, and I was a very poor example of wifehood and motherhood. We needed a house desperately, having searched for one for a year to no avail. One evening things just came to an impasse. The baby had been crying all day with a severe ear infection, and there was the possibility that an operation would have to be performed. Every last vestige of my joy was gone, and my husband was giving up.
