"That little book"

A man who had attended services in a Church of Christ, Scientist, got so interested in Christian Science that he had a great desire to read its textbook. At that time the book had not been translated into the language of the country where he lived, and he did not know a word of English. Thus he asked a private tutor if she would teach him enough English so he would be able to read "that little book." The little book was Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Three times a week he would meet with the tutor and read from Science and Health while she corrected, explained, and translated. He said his chief interest was not in grammar or composition; he wanted to know what was in the book. As he was alone and retired from business, he was able to spend most of the day reading. He made rapid progress, while building up a vocabulary with the help of a dictionary.

After a few months he was getting interested in many other subjects. Literature and classical music became his hobbies, and he took a correspondence course in history and made weekly visits to the different museums in the city where he lived. After about six months he decided to make a trip to England, and on his return reported with joy that he was able to understand some English and even speak a few words. Eventually he married and went to live in England, becoming a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, there.
