"Our sufficiency is of God"

One of the inbred illusions of the human mind is that it is self-sufficient. Yet its pretensions and its claims end in sadness. Indeed, much of the unhappiness of the race can be traced to the belief of material self-sufficiency. We do not have to suffer this illusion. Spiritually-minded individuals through the ages have seen through it and still do. Paul had certainly been aroused from it when he wrote, "Such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God." II Cor. 3:4, 5;

What all-embracing comfort lies in that statement "Our sufficiency is of God," when we discover that God, our source, is the one intelligence, is Mind, and that He is Love! This is the teaching of Christian Science, and it nullifies the arrogance of the so-called mortal mind.

The great prophet Isaiah turned habitually to God as the source of his wisdom. He warned, "Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!" Isa. 5:21; His warning is pertinent today in all fields of human endeavor. On the other hand, the intellectual, the artist, the businessman, the athlete—any one of us—who is acknowledging God as the one Mind, the source of all true thought and ability, and is developing the listening ear, is leaving mediocrity and the sadnesses of limited mortal thinking behind and opening the door to glorious progress and peace of mind.
