Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science,...

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in Science and Health (p. 192), "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power." As a Christian Scientist, I had read that statement when it occurred in the weekly Lesson-Sermons over the years and had read it in connection with other study that I had done, but it was not until a couple of years ago that it really took on a special meaning for me.

For several years, during the summer months, it has been my privilege to head an organization of over a hundred young men who are responsible for the safety and well-being of many visitors to a summer resort. Our specific job is to see that those who enjoy swimming do so in safety and, in general, to supervise the beach activities over a stretch of ten and a half miles directly on the Atlantic Ocean.

Several summers ago I awoke one morning feeling quite ill. I felt somewhat better after reading the lesson, and so I reported to my office for the day's work. After all of the young men under my supervision had been assigned to their respective duties, I decided to leave the office and go out on the beach to rest a bit near an area patrolled by one of my men. As I sat there, I realized that I had inadvertently picked an area under the supervision of a new man and that perhaps I could be of help to him as he became acclimated to a new job. I left my comfortable spot and relocated so that I could converse with the new recruit and give him further instruction and discuss his duties with him.
