Resolving "things into thoughts"
To control material conditions by spiritually mental means seems impossible until thought is enlightened by Christian Science. To the human mind, matter seems to be solid and real, and mental activity to be largely subservient to matter. Thought is seen as a function of the brain and without spiritual connotations.
Christian Science boldly denies the reality of matter. This denial is basic to its healing practice because it undercuts the seeming substance and action of all diseased conditions. This Science asserts that Spirit, God, and His thoughts, or ideas, are the only reality. It demonstrates matter to be an illusive picture in human thought, an inversion of reality, and the material universe a counterfeit of divine Mind's universe of spiritual ideas. Mrs. Eddy writes: "The verity of Mind shows conclusively how it is that matter seems to be, but is not. Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas." Science and Health, p. 123;
Although it seems to be solid, living matter, the human body with all its organs and parts—and including its occasional diseased conditions—is no more than externalized human thought. It is a false belief, an illusion, and Christian Science masters this belief and its harmful effects with the truth of man. Mrs. Eddy's teachings reveal man's real body to be spiritual, a compound idea reflecting the perfection and eternality of God, the one divine Life.
