RADIO PROGRAM NO. 428 - Overcoming Fear of the Dark

[The participants are John Lewis Selover and Marni Politte.]

Politte: More and more people are saying, "I don't like to go out at night." Some organizations have even given up having meetings at night because of poor attendance. People just are not willing to go out into the dark and face what they feel are dangers likely to be there. Do you think our fear is more a fear of these dangers than simply a fear of the dark?

Selover: Both, probably. Evil and danger are often associated with darkness. Even a familiar room, for instance, can loom foreboding in the dark. But turn on the light, and menacing shapes turn back into familiar furniture.
