Which Way Are You Headed?

Are you conducting a kind of rearguard, defensive action staving off mortality, or are you expecting and experiencing a progressive sense of God's presence, power, and love? Is your way upward? Such questions are pertinent to our attitude in demonstrating Christian Science. It is the difference between making the best of a patch-up job on a mortal man or demonstrating the Christ, the true idea of God, as our ideal. Mrs. Eddy tells us, "When spiritual being is understood in all its perfection, continuity, and might, then shall man be found in God's image." Science and Health, p. 325;

In our prayers in Christian Science we should not hesitate to claim perfection as the God-ordained state of man's being. Divine Mind could do no less than create intelligently and govern perfectly. The more we understand of God, the more of His eternal nature we will demonstrate. This was the direction of Jesus' career. It was always upward, headed toward the ascension. Can we do less than follow him? Naturally we will not presume to be ahead of our demonstration or assume something that we do not understand. But within our own sense of individual destiny we should be sure that man is God's own child and that we are headed toward the realization of this scientific fact.

It is obvious enough that the general trend of mortal thought is headed downward. The Bible portrays the mortal sense of man as born to trouble and destined for destruction. But we can and must come to the conclusion that as God's child we are not born of the "will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." John 1:13; This immortal sense of man is the fact of being and should be considered to be the normal sense that we are to demonstrate in our experience.
