ZACCHAEUS

Zacchaeus looked down from sycamore tree
On the road that led toward
Galilee.

Welcoming cries from the crowd were heard.
(Why was his heart so strangely
Stirred?

He was old in sin, in greed and hate.
Remorse had come at last—
Too late?)

Zacchaeus looked down in grief and shame.
But the Lord looked up and called
His name.

"Make haste ... come down," he heard him say,
"For I must abide at thy house
Today."

Oh, joy! to find the Christ his guest,
To know himself not blamed
But blessed!

Oh, joy! to give, restore fourfold,
And prove that wealth is Love—
Not gold.

The mask of sin had dropped away;
Salvation came on that
Bright day

When the Lord looked up and smiled to see
The face of a child in the
Sycamore tree.
