When I was in the third grade, my family took up the study of...
When I was in the third grade, my family took up the study of Christian Science after the doctors gave my father only a short time to live because of tuberculosis in its advanced stages. With the consecrated prayer of a Christian Science practitioner, who treated him, my father was completely healed within a period of four months. This healing and my own attendance at a Christian Science Sunday School, which followed, instilled in me a deep faith in the efficacy of Christian Science.
About two weeks before the end of my junior year in high school, I lost consciousness one afternoon in a neighborhood drugstore. When I regained consciousness, I found myself in a doctor's office, where some kind friends had taken me. The doctor was in the process of examining me, and when he had completed his examination, his diagnosis was that one lung had collapsed and my heart was out of place. I was told that I would have to go to the hospital for a month and, if my condition improved sufficiently, I would be sent to a sanatorium for one year to recuperate. I then informed the doctor that my parents were Christian Scientists and that it was my desire to have Christian Science treatment. The doctor said that in that event he could do no more.
Since neither of my parents was at home, I was taken to the home of a Christian Science friend, a practitioner, who lovingly cared for me until my father arrived and took me home. I received Christian Science treatment, and five days later I was able to go on a month's vacation at Lake Erie, where I spent many hours swimming each day. The healing was complete.
