Heaven Comes Gently
It is a mistake to believe that men can force perfection on the world. Brotherly love, with its characteristics of forbearance, peace, justice, and affection, comes gently to human consciousness. Anyone wishing to contribute to the appearing of heaven on earth should realize that he can do this only by letting these sweet qualities of love that he desires to see established in the world shine through his own thoughts and actions wherever he may be.
Derived as they are from God, these qualities reflect the divine power to heal all kinds of discord in human affairs. In proportion as an individual expresses them in daily life, they bring light not only to the private communities of home, school, college campus, and office in which he lives and works, but to the whole of society as well. They illuminate the dark areas of human experience and effectively dispel both sin and suffering in all their forms. Human will, on the other hand, does exactly the reverse. It intensifies the very evidence it is designed to get rid of, increases fear and hate, and adds continually to the flames of mankind's misery.
Yet this fact seems constantly to have been ignored. Mortal history is from the beginning a chronicle marked by continual outbreaks of hostility and violence. Its pages are punctuated by accounts of war. And still today the newspapers are heavy with reports of passion and prejudice, injustice, envy, jealousy, and aggression.
