With humility and a great sense of wonder at the power of God,...
With humility and a great sense of wonder at the power of God, "who healeth all thy diseases"(Ps. 103:3), I would like to tell of a healing I experienced two years ago while vacationing in Florida.
My sister-in-law and I had met for two weeks of rest, study, and companionship away from our responsibilities in different distant cities. The first day there we dressed for bathing, walked to the beach, and there applied suntan lotion with the thought of more quickly acquiring a tan. But because of cloudy skies we returned to the apartment in less than half an hour. That night my skin was quite red and uncomfortable. The next morning it was most evident that we must contact both a practitioner and a Christian Science nurse. A deep, poisonous burn covered two-thirds of my body.
I shall never forget the face of the nurse when she came that first day. The mirror had told me that I looked rather frightful. No one would have recognized me. I found no fear, no alarm, no disturbance in her glance. Seeing this steady, calm, loving gaze eased my fear. Mrs. Eddy's words came to me, "But why should we stand aghast at nothingness?"(Science and Health, p. 563.)
It was two weeks before I left the apartment. During that period the practitioner, who I might add was fifteen hundred miles away, stood by me with faithful treatment through prayer in Christian Science. So, indeed, did my dear sister-in-law, who read and talked the truth to me many hours. The nurse brought a record player, together with some records of Christian Science solos and articles. One message in particular that I pondered brought out clearly the teaching that man is not a mortal, separated from God, vainly trying to reflect Him. Man is reflection. I reveled in this concept of man and saw that harmony can never be interrupted. The healing was complete in three weeks, except for a brown patch on one arm, and this soon faded away. There was never a day that progress was not evidenced.
Even more to be cherished than the healing was the abiding understanding of the power of Truth. As Mrs. Eddy says in her book Miscellaneous Writings (p. 182), "When the Word is made flesh,—that is, rendered practical,—this eternal Truth will be understood; and sickness, sin, and death will yield to it, even as they did more than eighteen centuries ago."
What a privilege to be a follower of the Master, Christ Jesus, and of his faithful follower, Mrs. Eddy!
