How can I convey what Christian Science means...
How can I convey what Christian Science means to me! It has blessed me in countless ways, and the possibilities of things to come are impressive because of the glimpses of God's power I have already seen.
One of the most satisfying benefits is that I find an answer to any and all questions I have about life and living. Sometimes it takes humble, earnest digging into the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, but with the prayerful effort comes the answer.
A healing that meant a great deal to me came because of a fall on the ice. I was going out to get the mail at the roadside mailbox. It was a hard fall, and I seemed unable to rise. However, I was praying according to Christian Science, declaring my true nature as a creation of God, the divine Father and Mother. I managed to get up and struggled to the mailbox.
Each step was less difficult as I recalled Mrs. Eddy's advice in Science and Health to a mother whose child has fallen(pp. 154, 155): "The better and more successful method for any mother to adopt is to say: 'Oh, never mind! You're not hurt, so don't think you are.'" I stressed "so don't think you are," and realized that it was thinking that counted. A wonderful sense of God's care for me, His child, came over me, and I walked more freely.
However, it was very difficult for me to rise from a sitting position or to climb stairs. I was serving as First Reader at the time. With continued thankfulness to God, my creator and Parent, and through knowing I must not think that I was hurt, I was able to do my part in the service without obvious handicap.
Because of this I longed to express my gratitude at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. This I did, for even though I was not entirely free physically, I was too deeply grateful for what I had learned of my relationship to God to keep still. So I simply expressed my gratitude for the truths I had learned in a hard experience.
The next day, as I was laboriously climbing steps, there went through my thinking a statement from Science and Health (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well." Suddenly the body uttered no complaints. I was well. The momentary awareness of life in Spirit, not in matter, had made me realize the fallacy of thinking I had to live with material results of a fall.
My gratitude is boundless that the Church of Christ, Scientist, is nurturing the truths of God and His universe and giving them to mankind.
