Real Mind—The Source of Good

Most physical scientists today assert the brain-is-the-mind theory. It has been said that the brain emits thoughts, or electrical impulses, much as other organs exude vital body secretions. However, discoveries in the realm of atomic physics go much further. They show that all matter, the human body and brain included, is not solid substance but electrical energy—largely empty space—and how in the world can this blind energy originate thought, or even be a medium for it?

Over one hundred years ago—and far in advance of present-day mind-theories—Mrs. Eddy discovered the spiritual nature of life and consciousness. She showed the belief in a brain-centered mind to be an illusion similar to the dream-consciousness we seem to experience when asleep. She revealed this false mind to be the source of evil, the devilish belief that man is merely an intelligent animal who has evolved from lower forms of life and is subject to the diseases, the lusts, and the final extinction that faith in fallible matter imposes on all living things. With straightforward clarity Mrs. Eddy writes: "Every concept which seems to begin with the brain begins falsely. Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence." Science and Health, p. 262;

Christian Science reveals this primal cause to be infinite, conscious Being, the Mind of man and the universe. This Mind is the only knower, the universal Ego that includes the real man within itself and supplies him with all right ideas. Man, then, is a distinct conscious identity individualizing the activity of the one Mind. He is the subjective expression of this Mind, and partakes of all its qualities and attributes. Through the law of reflection man knows because God knows first.
