RADIO PROGRAM NO. 406 - Deciding How Best to Serve

[The participants are Jack Krieger, a Christian Scientist, and William Pead, who is not a Christian Scientist.]

Pead: We who face the draft today have a difficult decision—how best to serve. It affects our family, our education, our entire future. There are many concerns involved. We get conflicting advice and opposing viewpoints from our family, church, friends, and fellow students.Krieger: What are some of the alternatives open to you?Pead: First, of course, is to enlist. You have a choice of the service you feel is best for you. Secondly, the individual who waits to be drafted also has some choice—to show his abilities, what he can do. Thirdly, one can declare himself a conscientious objector. A number of people I know feel this way.Krieger: Certainly it is very much an individual decision, and I don't think there is any rule of thumb we can follow. For example, it requires that we examine our motives and pray for divine guidance in making our decision, prayer that helps us arrive at doing what is most nearly right under the circumstances.
