Christian Science was introduced to my parents before I was...

Christian Science was introduced to my parents before I was born, and I therefore had the privilege of attending the Christian Science Sunday School from the age of two until I was twenty. Through the years I have had many practical proofs of the power of God as applied to human experience. Broken bones have been set and mended through prayer alone, numerous physical ills have been overcome, and I have experienced many proofs of God's protecting power during automobile and plane trips.

I want to share an experience I had about nine years ago, which seemed especially wonderful to me. My husband and I were traveling across country on our way to a new position and a new home. One afternoon as we drove along I held my watch to my ear and heard nothing. I held it to the other ear and found I could hear it ticking loudly several inches away. At first I was frightened, and questions flashed through my thoughts: When did I lose the hearing in that ear. What had caused it? I soon realized, however, that this condition could not be healed with that approach, and I turned away from the material evidence and began to pray about it as we are taught to do in Christian Science.

I recalled the Bible verse (Prov. 20:12), "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." Mrs. Eddy gives us the spiritual definition of "ears" in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health (p. 585): "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding." I knew that my hearing was not dependent upon material structure. I knew also that God's idea, man, possesses the spiritual understanding necessary to heal any claim of error.
