While cleaning out an old bed of ivy in the yard, wearing only a pair of swimming trunks, I suddenly found hornets on my body from my head to my feet. I had struck a hornet's nest. Brushing the hornets off my body and out of my hair as best I could, I retreated several steps, praying, declaring man's unity with God, as we are taught to do in Christian Science.

I remember one thought that predominated in the first few moments of reasoning: that there is no poison in the kingdom of heaven and that I was in that kingdom, free from any suggestion of poisoning. I had a feeling of dizziness and of losing consciousness while I continued to pray, but I worked vigorously to deny this possibility.

When I had gained a sense of dominion, I retrieved the garden tools and moved into another area, where I continued to pray while working with the soil.
