Emerge Gently
In applying Christian Science to solve human problems one depends upon his spiritual understanding of the healing power of Truth. He does not try to force the human consciousness but leads it to higher concepts through the unfoldment of the truth of being. The textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, advises its students: "Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth." Science and Health, p. 485;
The spirit of gentleness pervaded Christ Jesus' ministry. He was patient with those who were struggling with wrong elements of character. he taught that repentance was the necessary prelude to reformation and healing. He unfolded to mankind the higher nature of man in the image and likeness of God and then taught them how to realize this Christly nature in their lives. His work was based upon understanding, an understanding of the truth of being.
Perfection underlies the reality of being. All healing is some measure of this perfection coming to light through understanding. Correlatively, all suffering is due to some degree of misunderstanding—either a willful or an ignorant misapprehension of the facts. Through the assimilation of Christian Science and the attainment of a correct understanding of man in God's likeness we have the prospect of being too intelligent to sin and too well-informed to be sick. But this comes about only as the human mind is willing to relinquish its false beliefs.
