Immunity Through Christian Science

At a time when medical immunization against an array of diseases is being urged in many communities, the Christian Scientist is challenged to define his own basis for immunity from disease. He may find himself asking: "Have I really something more certain than material methods of immunization? Can I rely on Christian Science not only for occasional healing but for positive freedom? Does my stand for spiritual methods cut me off from my neighbors, or does it give me something to contribute to everyone's well-being?"

One might as well face the certainty of Christian Science at the outset. This Science is more sure and permanent in its effects than material medicine because it rests on infallible Principle and demonstrates the unbreakable laws of God. We may fall down in its application, but we never have to. The Principle and rules are made plain, and the Christ is with us to direct each step. The Christ Science is no more available and natural for one than for another, and sooner or later this must become clear to everyone. Where else but to God, the unerring and eternal good, would one turn for immunity from evil?

The perfect goodness of God underlies the perfect immunity of man, God's expression. This man, the spiritual, indestructible man Christ Jesus exemplified and Christian Science brings to light, is only faintly perceived as yet. But he is present, as God is present. As soon as we face this fact of our real being as representative of God, good, and begin to live that way, we are on a course that runs counter to evil, physical as well as moral, and that must certainly destroy it. Each step takes dedicated prayer and yielding of human nature to God's nature. It often takes specific persistent replacement of sense evidence with the truth of being. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes of this winning battle in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "A scientific mental method is more sanitary than the use of drugs, and such a mental method produces permanent health. Science must go over the whole ground, and dig up every seed of error's sowing." (Science and Health, p. 79)
