Attaining Spiritual Maturity

No one would choose to remain a tiny child throughout his life. Physical and mental growth are normal, and the duties and challenges that go hand in hand with progress bring meaning and interest to human experience. An infant is an undeveloped human personality, helpless to care for its simplest needs. What a tragedy it would be if this were the extent of its potential!

Happily, physical and intellectual development in various degrees is the norm for most people, but too often the infinitely more important subject of spiritual growth is relegated to the background or completely ignored. Mrs. Eddy writes, "Lulled by stupefying illusions, the world is asleep in the cradle of infancy, dreaming away the hours." Further on she continues, "Humanity advances slowly out of sinning sense into spiritual understanding; unwillingness to learn all things rightly, binds Christendom with chains." Science and Health, pp. 95, 96;

Infantile conceptions of spiritual reality have kept humanity in bondage long enough! It is high time the race awakened to man's full potential as the perfect expression of God, infinite Mind. Ignorance of the metaphysical Science underlying creation has led to widespread inharmony. Disease, war, accidents, are not creations of an omnipotent God whom the Bible reveals as divine Love. These phenomena are subjective states of the carnal, or mortal, mind. They are mental pictures of the ignorance, fear, hate, and lust that operate largely unchecked in human thought.
