The First Commandment Today
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me" Ex. 20:3; states the First Commandment, which God gave to Moses. Christ Jesus put it this way, in line with Moses' words in Deuteronomy (see 6:5): "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength." Mark 12:30;
Mrs. Eddy says of the First Commandment: "This me is Spirit. Therefore the command means this: Thou shalt have no intelligence, no life, no substance, no truth, no love, but that which is spiritual." Science and Health, p. 467;
The First Commandment was given in terms the people were able to understand, and it has continued to be adaptable to the conditions of the times. Many people today are not satisfied with either a thou-shalt-not or a thou-shalt attitude because they do not understand that there is no intelligence, substance, truth, or love in matter. Therefore the conditions of our times appear to make especially urgent demands on this commandment.
