Gratitude heals

Gratitude heals. I have learned in my experience that far more than a mere acknowledgment of this fact is necessary to effect a complete healing in Christian Science.

Several years ago, through the help of a Christian Science practitioner, I experienced temporary relief from bronchial asthma. But the healing was not complete. Later it seemed I was also losing my hearing. Being very discouraged, I called a practitioner again. Many times, in order to receive a healing, we are asked to do the very thing that seems most difficult. The practitioner asked that 1 lie down and have my husband read to me the testimonies of healing appearing in a current copy of the Sentinel. She asked me to express gratitude for the healings of others. Expressing gratitude for another's healing, not having received my own, seemed very difficult; but, as a student of Christian Science, I knew it was right to be obedient. After expressing gratitude for several testimonies I fell asleep and awakened some hours later quite free.

A few years later the same condition returned. This time I knew that something more was required of me. Speaking of gratitude. Mrs. Eddy writes in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 3): "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech."
