Could Existence Ever Be a Blank?

We are asked an interesting question in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank?"  Science and Health, p. 266; A thorough consideration of this question can startle thought and uncover many subtle suggestions of the carnal mind regarding the belief that in a given situation existence can be a blank.

A businessman may entertain the suggestion that existence would be a blank if he could no longer pursue his selected vocation. A mother might find herself accepting the somewhat hidden suggestion that existence would be a blank without her children. A devoted husband or wife might be led to believe that existence would be a blank without the other partner. And a child might feel the same way toward life without his parents. Error further urges the belief that existence would be a blank if one's immediate source of income were cut off.

The statement given by Mrs. Eddy following this question contains the answer to all the above erroneous suggestions. She writes: "Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth. Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the lesson is sufficient to exalt you; for 'man's extremity is God's opportunity.' "
