Freedom in True Self-consciousness

There is a genuine self-consciousness that frees one from the spurious, intensely personal sense of self. The tension and awkwardness engendered by fear, shyness, self-depreciation, disappear when it is clearly realized that God is the Mind of man, the one and only self-conscious Ego, who, through the law of reflection, imparts to man the peace and poise of His own nature. At every moment and under every circumstance man's true identity dwells in the substance and love of the one Mind, and is confidently at rest in this changeless haven of good.

Christian Science teaches that what appears to be a material personality having a brain-centered mind is not man at all. It is a counterfeit mental picture produced mesmerically by mortal mind in much the same way that this mind seemingly produces personalities in a dream. This wrong concept of identity keeps one in bondage, and the more he turns away from the contemplation of human personality in himself or in others the freer and more poised he becomes.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in Miscellaneous Writings, "According to Christian Science, material personality is an error in premise, and must result in erroneous conclusions." Mis., p. 309; Further on she continues: "The consciousness of corporeality, and whatever is connected therewith, must be outgrown. Corporeal falsities include all obstacles to health, holiness, and heaven. Man's individual life is infinitely above a bodily form of existence, and the human concept antagonizes the divine."
