For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than...
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebr. 4:12). The healing power of these liberating words of Truth was proved when a devoted Christian Science practitioner declared them while giving me Christian Science treatment.
The problem arose when I was a junior high school pupil leading a very active life. Over a period of several weeks an abdominal pain gradually developed and recurred periodically. As taught to do in the Christian Science Sunday School, I quietly prayed, applying truths concerning man's perfect relationship to God, infinite Love, and frequently repeated "the scientific statement of being," given in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Especially helpful were the words (p. 468), "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." This prayer brought comfort each time the pain returned, whether at my school desk or in some other activity. Since I looked upon the difficulty as an ordinary stomachache, I did not bother to tell my parents or anyone about it.
One day a sudden, severe attack caused me to drop to the school floor in great difficulty. The shop teacher carried me to the nurse's room, where the nurse diagnosed the case as acute appendicitis, insisting that she call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. Informing her that I was a Christian Scientist, I asked her to call my mother, who would know what to do. Upon my mother's request a practitioner immediately took up the case, and I was allowed to go home.
