What Work Is Most Needed?

An interesting radio program some time ago discussed what the work week might be like in the year 2000. It was the general opinion that people would have to work only three days a week. The question raised was what people would do when they found so much leisure time on their hands. One obvious answer was that people would have to find additional work to do.

What challenging and rewarding kind of work should people take up when they have more leisure time? What work is most needed today when lack, unrest, dissension, and wars deeply trouble humanity? What will the twenty-first century demand of men that they may attain a state of existence more approaching the ideal of harmony and peace among men and nations?

Is not the demand of this day, as well as of the future, to work to be Christlike, to be a true Christian, to live a life more and more approximating the life of Christ Jesus? How many of us already consider ourselves to be Christians by reason of heredity or family background or by reason of our faithful attendance at church? The fact is that to emulate the Master truly, to heal ourselves and others of sickness, sinful tendencies, and belief in the inevitability of discord and death, we are required to gain a more scientific sense of religion, to engage in daily watchfulness and prayerful metaphysical work.
