What Am I Leaning On?

"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," Science and Health, Pref., p. vii Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health. And students of Christian Science well know the blessings that come from leaning on the infinite power of God. They need to be on guard, then, against error's malicious intent to divert their attention from depending on spiritual power to heal and sustain them.

The carnal so-called mind is continuously and subtly suggesting to us that there are more practical sources of support. It claims the power to implant fear and confusion in our thinking, and in the name of practicality it would mesmerize us into dividing our allegiance between matter and Spirit. It would have us substitute reliance upon persons for our reliance upon Principle, thus deceiving us into believing that we are relying upon the infinite power of God when, in reality, we are not. So it might be well for us all to search our thinking more often and more objectively and ask ourselves, What am I leaning on?

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding," Prov. 3:5 the Old Testament writer admonished. The burden of human life is the material sense of self, its beliefs and requirements, all of them impositions of illusive mortal mind and its deceptive dream of a material existence. The tendency of this pseudo mind is to have us place exaggerated dependence on matter and mortals for our supply and well-being. It would have us depend upon certain types of food, hygiene, and material so-called laws for our sustenance and health, upon monetary wealth for our security, and upon human personalities for our happiness.
