As a young boy growing up in a midwestern state, I was considered anything but robust. The sixth grade teacher refused to accept me in her classes. She thought I was not strong enough to do the work. However, she was overruled by the school board. It was not until my freshman year in college that I discovered I was suffering from tuberculosis. It was necessary for me to enter a sanatarium to "take the cure." There were several years of this kind of living in sanatariums, both in my home state and on the Pacific Coast. Eventually I was able to do part-time work and become a member of society once more. However, the medical cure had failed to build me up, and I seemed headed for a life of semi-invalidism.
It was at this point that I was invited to join a family group at a summer resort for a short vacation. My hostess had met a woman in a nearby cottage who was a Christian Scientist. Evidently she had given her the history of my illness and my very poor prospects for a life of usefulness. As a result this woman brought over a Sentinel for me to read. Although very much prejudiced against Christian Science, I did find it interesting. But I was not ready to accept its healing message. However, a seed had been planted, although it did not come to fruition until several years later.
I had moved to another state. Things were at a low ebb. My health was getting worse, and I was down to my last few dollars. I had been out of bed little of the time for about seven weeks. I realized this could not go on indefinitely, so I dressed and went to a Sunday evening service in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, to learn more about Christian Science. After the service an usher, a very discerning man, introduced me to several people in the foyer. One of these was a woman who I thought might be a practitioner. When I found that she was, I asked for an appointment. She told me to come to her office the following Tuesday. I remember that it seemed an interminable time to wait, for I felt that at last good was about to come into my life.
