Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 114), "Christian Science explains all cause and effect as mental, not physical." Further in the same paragraph she says of Christian Science, "It shows the scientific relation of man to God, disentangles the interlaced ambiguities of being, and sets free the imprisoned thought."

Very early one morning I became very ill. A great sense of fear seemed to engulf me. At five o'clock I did struggle to the kitchen to prepare breakfast but collapsed and had to call my husband for help. He immediately telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, who began to treat me; and since I was in so much distress, my husband started reading aloud to me from Science and Health.

While I had been a student of Christian Science for many years and had had many proofs of God's protection, I doubted whether I could rely absolutely on this truth in a time of crisis. I was so fearful that I could not think clearly, but because of the urgency of the matter I had to make a decision. As soon as I made my decision to rely absolutely on Christian Science for my healing, much of the fear left; but the physical condition took time to heal. I was bedridden for one week. I had no control over my body, and I could not see or walk. Then when I was able to get up, it was necessary for me to cling to the furniture or whatever was available to get around. This was not an immediate healing. It required me to replace my material thinking with the spiritual idea of health and life in all its aspects.
