[The speaker is Florence Ludgate, a Christian Science practitioner, The questioner is Theodore Clapp, a guidance counselor.]

Questioner: Every parent wants his children to become competent, self-respecting individuals. But many feel that limited means or background make it very difficult for children to have a real sense of self-respect. Would you agree?

Speaker: Well, if we look at the vast number of children in the world that we yearn to help and feel that their only basis of self-respect is in a favorable home background or education, we certainly might feel quite disheartened. But fortunately there is a much deeper basis for self-respect.
