Christian Science was a great help to my wife and me when I became faced with the problem of choosing a means of fulfilling my obligation of military service to my country. As I looked into all the ways of serving in the Armed Forces, my wife and I claimed the truths taught in Christian Science, knowing our future was already established in the one, all-knowing Mind, God. We knew that whatever was God's plan for His ideas would be unfolded to us and would include only good for us and all others involved. Consequently the choice we made provided numerous blessings for our family and even opportunities to use my civilian training.
When orders to a tactical unit were received near the end of my Marine officer basic instruction, a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services serving at the base told my wife and me to remember that we were not being sent anywhere by chance but were being placed by the one, all-knowing Mind, God, for a specific purpose, which included blessing for others and ourselves. We remembered the Minister's words whenever we thought about why we were assigned to a certain place. We were always able to see that each change of station or change of duty was a step toward more responsibility and greater opportunities for proving the effectiveness of Christian Science prayer. When orders came to report to a new unit for training and deployment to Vietnam, we continued to work in Christian Science, knowing that man could never be deprived of good nor be separated from the Father's love.
While we were en route to Vietnam, our battalion doctors gave lectures regarding the tropical diseases and health hazards associated with that area. Medicines and precautions were prescribed for the prevention of each of the numerous diseases related to the native climate, food, water, and insects. I realized that as a Christian Scientist my protection from the dangers described was not medicine but my spiritual understanding of man as a child of God. I knew that in reality I did not exist in a matter body, subject to disease and death, but as the spiritual image and likeness of the omnipotent creator, Mind. I studied references from the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy regarding the perfection of man and his unity with God. This study helped clear my thoughts of the fears I absorbed from the lectures.
