My mother learned of Christian Science before I was old enough to attend school. She had been active in an orthodox church and was an earnest student of the Bible. When she began to understand the truths of Christian Science, she was overjoyed to have at last found a religion that heals as Christ Jesus healed, a religion that she felt was satisfying and priceless.

We lived in a very small town where there were no other students of Christian Science. Mother would often take a train to a town forty miles away where she could spend precious hours in the Christian Science Reading Room.

In our little village there was much opposition to what the residents believed Christian Science to be. I can well remember that when a derogatory remark was repeated to my mother, she only smiled sweetly and said, "It doesn't matter at all what others think of me. It's what I think about them that is important."
