One summer as we traveled along a highway, the car we were riding...

One summer as we traveled along a highway, the car we were riding in left the road suddenly, and all four occupants were thrown from the wreckage. I was unable to rise or move in any way, and the suggestion of pain was very insistent. The state police had us taken by ambulance to the local hospital. On the way I constantly repeated "the scientific statement of being" as given to us in Science and Health with key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. This statement begins with the words: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (p. 468). My daughter was on a stretcher in the same ambulance and was softly singing Mrs. Eddy's hymns form the Christian Science Hymnal.

Emergency ward attendants cared for me in great haste, and shortly thereafter the doctor pronounced his X-ray verdict of nineteen ribs broken and a fractured pelvic bone, as well as various cuts and bruises. He said that the pelvic must be pinned, that I would be in a cast flat on my back for six months, and that then I would have to learn to walk all over again.

My granddaughter and daughter were able to leave the hospital that evening. My husband, who had been driving the car was released the next morning. They visited with me that day and told me that a Christian Science practitioner was giving me treatment. We talked of God's presence and control. It was decided that they would continue on a day's journey to my daughter's home. I was filled with a great sense of peace at the protection they had experienced.
