I first heard of Christian Science about forty years ago
I first heard of Christian Science about forty years ago. At that time I felt very overworked. I was being treated by a doctor as a heart sufferer. Little hope was held out for my recovery. My mother purchased the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, in a Christian Science Reading Room and asked me to read it. Very much opposed, as I considered myself to be a well-oriented Christian versed in the Scriptures, I nevertheless obediently began reading.
Although in the beginning I understood little of what I read, I did become inwardly happy again and felt liberated so that I said to myself with certainty, "You are healed." And I was healed. Since then this textbook has been my constant companion. In spite of this, from time to time mental as well as physical conditions of illness have tried to rule me. I am especially reminded of an apparently very serious condition. One evening I experienced severe Stomach pains so that I no longer felt comfortable in any position. I repeatedly declared "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of our textbook. This statement concludes with the words: "Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."
The pains continued to be severe so that I had to stand up and pace the room. It was about three o'clock in the morning when I said aloud, "Dear Father, Your truth is true, whether I live or die." This was the peak of my torment. The pains lessened and disappeared after a little while, and I slept soundly until morning.
