RADIO PROGRAM NO. 254 - Prayer and the Spiritual Healing Movement, Part III

Questioner: In speaking about prayer last week, you said that there were three qualities essential to effective prayer: absolute faith, spiritual understanding, and unselfed love. Now, James says in the Bible that when we ask and receive not, it's because we ask amiss. Which one of those three points would you say that we most neglect, which is most responsible for the failure of our prayers to work?

Speaker: Those words are from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The sentence reads (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."

One might say that absolute faith rests on having spiritual understanding and that spiritual understanding necessitates an unselfed love if we're really going to understand God and man's true spiritual nature. Absolute faith, in a sense, is the result of the understanding and the love.
