I was brought up in an orthodox Sunday School and was teaching...

I was brought up in an orthodox Sunday School and was teaching a class of young girls when I met the man who was to become my husband. His family had a background of Christian Science, and after I had asked many questions and had had discussions, I became interested and gained faith in Christian Science. I know now, though, that what I lacked was understanding.

After we were married, our children attended the Christian Science Sunday School, but I was enjoying a very material way of life that involved smoking and social drinking. Whenever I had a physical difficulty, I would call a Christian Science practitioner, read the works of Mrs. Eddy and the Christian Science periodicals, be healed, and then would turn right back to my material way of what I thought was an enjoyable life.

One day I got a call from the West Coast telling me that my mother was having a very serious operation. I went to her. While I spent hours waiting for her to come out of the operating room, I tried to pray, and I finally realized how much Christian Science meant to me. That evening I went to the bus depot, took a copy of The Christian Science Journal from a distribution rack and found the address of a nearby practitioner. She gave me many wonderful truths to think about and put me at peace concerning my mother.
