Years ago while boarding in rather isolated territory with a family who were not Christian Scientists, I awoke one cold winter night in great distress. The nearest practitioner lived nearly fifty miles away, and the nearest telephone was at a farmhouse approximately two miles away.

I tried to recall some of the statements of truth I had been reading before going to bed. The only one I could remember in its entirety is, "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 473). To this I clung.

One side of my face felt hard to my touch, and the pain increased. Several times I slipped out of bed and went to the head of the stairway to call someone to go to the telephone, but each time I went back to bed. I just could not ask anyone to make such a trip which would involve waking another family.
