"Laying the axe at the root"

Anyone interested in gardening knows that the way to get rid of a plant or a weed is to uproot it or to destroy the roots. Similar activity is useful to us in metaphysics when we are seeking to eliminate wrong beliefs from human thought and experience. It is not sufficient to destroy just the visible manifestations or to abstain from visible expression of error; we must get at the root and remove any seeming cause for evil. When this work is faithfully done, there will be no outward experience of evil.

Latent beliefs have a way of showing up in one's life if they are not disposed of effectively. The area of so-called unconscious thought is a field that is explored endlessly by the advocates of psychology. But the only way really to dispose of error is to get at the root of it, namely, the belief that there is a mind apart from God. This is the basic error.

To have one God is to have one Mind. And to find out that this Mind is wholly good with no element of evil is to challenge effectively evil's claim to reality. As one progressively demonstrates this fact in his life, he will be uprooting his belief in evil, and he will be proportionately liberating his experience from suffering. Mrs. Eddy says, "Divine Science lays the axe at the root of the illusion that life, or mind, is formed by or is in the material body, and Science will eventually destroy this illusion through the self-destruction of all error and the beatified understanding of the Science of Life." Science and Health, p. 303;
