About two years ago, I went to the dentist for what I thought...

About two years ago, I went to the dentist for what I thought was a routine cleaning. The dentist told me that there was a condition in my mouth which needed immediate medical attention. He explained to me that the bones in my gums were decaying, my teeth had loosened considerably, and if I did not have quite extensive dental surgery done soon, there was danger that I would lose all my teeth.

The thought that came to me at that moment was that this condition, being material, was not a true one, and, therefore, it could not be part of man, since nothing untrue can be part of God's image and likeness. I told the dentist I would take care of the trouble through the study of Christian Science and thanked him for alerting me to it. He again stressed rather alarmingly that medical attention should be given to my gums, or he would not be responsible for what might happen.

I again rather firmly told him that Christian Science treatment would be applied and assured him that the condition would be cleared up. He finally agreed to let me wait for four months; but he insisted that I come back at that time for a checkup and, as he said, to start the medical treatments.
