Although I have known no religion other than Christian Science since the age of five, I certainly have had to make it my own through demonstration and right reasoning. I have found that the understanding and application of Christian Science cannot be handed down from parents to children like some inherited object but that each one must glimpse the truth for himself through an earnest, sincere study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

Numerous so-called childhood diseases were healed quickly and effectively for me in Christian Science through my mother's prayers or those of dedicated practitioners, but the healing for which I am particularly grateful is the first one which came through my own communing with our divine Father-Mother God and which convinced me that I would never rely on any other means for healing.

It occurred in my early teens during a Christmas holiday. I began to drop almost everything I picked up; and while at first my mother and I believed this to be a phase of clumsiness, by the time I returned to boarding school, some five hundred miles away, the condition appeared to be alarming. I could no longer hold anything with my right hand, and in addition my arm tended to move involuntarily from time to time. Because of the paralyzed condition, I could not attend classes.
