Effective Window Displays

Prayerfully planned window displays in a Christian Science Reading Room are one of the most effective means of presenting Christian Science to the passersby. Many individuals make a practice of stopping at the window to glean an inspired thought for the day. Others experience healing as they accept the spiritual truth they read.

A librarian from Illinois writes: "A statement having profound meaning in a prayerful approach to window displays is found in 'Retrospection and Introspection' by Mrs. Eddy, 'The student should be most careful not to thrust aside Science, and shade God's window which lets in light, or seek to stand in God's stead (p. 90). This statement becomes a dynamic force in the experience of the passerby who discovers the spiritual message awaiting his acceptance.

"The following incident illustrates this truth. A woman living a distance from the Reading Room found herself nervous and ill one day. She resolved to go to the shopping district to do some errands rather than sit at home feeling miserable. After walking a block or more she found she was taking a route she seldom traveled. This brought her directly in front of the window of the Reading Room. Her eyes rested on the Scriptural words, 'Ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit' (Rom. 8:9). She reasoned that if she was not of the flesh, but of the Spirit, she could not be ill. A sense of peace and well-being came over her. Continuing on her way, she pondered this truth. When she returned home, she found she had overlooked an item on her list, so she made the trip again. Much to her delight there was no sense of fatigue after all that walking.
