Machinery driven by power units has been increasing the productivity of the individual worker for nearly 200 years. The crowning achievement of this effort— electronic devices capable of managing machinery and solving problems that arise in the course of making things—has been attained only recently, it is called automation, and is now, as we have seen, revolutionizing our national way of life....

We are rapidly approaching a situation, the experts say, where 20 per cent of the work force will be able to handle 100 per cent of the activity we now call work....
