Activities for the Armed Services

"Excellent fruitage resulted," said the Manager of Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services when describing a conference for Christian Science service personnel and their families at Berchtesgaden, Germany. The Manager attended the conference while in Europe last fall. He was there to assist Christian Scientists in the forces and to explore ways of strengthening and enlarging the work of Armed Services Activities.

Continuing his description of the conference, he reported, "One family came from the tip of Saudi Arabia. The others who attended came from all over Europe and from places in and around the Mediterranean Sea. The conference was an inspirational round of meetings beautifully tailored to meet the needs of military personnel. One highlight was a Christian Science lecture. Many gratefully testified to the healing power of Truth. The atmosphere was friendly, spontaneous, joyous."

Accompanied by representatives of the Church, the Manager called on Command Chaplains and on government and military officials in Germany, France, England, and Scotland. One such call was in Bonn, Germany, where he had two high level meetings. The first was in the Ministry of Defense with officials of the Bundeswehr, or West German Armed Forces. The second was in the office of the Chief of Chaplains of the Bundeswehr. At both meetings an explanation of the work of Armed Services Activities was followed by a discussion of the appropriate means for meeting the needs of Christian Scientists in the Bundeswehr. The meetings were valuable and informative and were marked by an atmosphere of friendliness, cooperation, and Christian fellowship.
